Nokia Braille Reader archived from Beta Labs
Wed, 2010-03-17 16:30Written by Esa, Senior Manager, Accessibility
Nokia Braille Reader, the experimental application for accessing incoming text messages using Braille and tactile feedback, is being archived from Beta Labs.
Since publishing the beta in September 2009, the application has been demonstrated in a number of customer events. The idea of using haptics in the user interface has been regarded as highly interesting, well complementing the more common visual and audio interfaces.
Developing the Nokia Braille Reader to a complete commercial application would require adding more features, such as support for e-mail, ways to manage all messages, etc. At the moment, our team has no plans to do this, but the feedback gathered during the past months will be used as input when developing new alternate ways to use our devices and services.
Nevertheless, and as requested by many associations and developers, Beta Labs will keep the Nokia Braille Reader available “as is”.
Stay tuned for new and emerging ideas around haptics and tactile feedback!

If the team has no intention to develop it further but people are still interest in it why not open source the product under the EPL?
I'm sure the Symbian Foundation would be able to help you with this.
Start a trend of moving all "failed" Beta Labs products into open source for other people to build on if they want to.
Beta labs.....Please this needs to be passed along to someone. I am interested in it.I have a group @BRAINtechPLEASE and electronicBRAINedgement who may be able to take this project on. I am also a moderator for Symbian Foundation and Nokia fan ....
How can I get involved? Additionally, Marcus Groeber, and a few others are very talented and involved with assistive tech. This AT is valuable and worthwhile to have more development. Low and no vision is a huge problem and if you have a prototype app or device, please don't put it on a shelf.....Send it to me,if that is an option, and the Symbian Foundation may be a great place to develop it further as well.
Thank you very much for this post and notification, so those of us in AT can assist in progressing what your hard work and great idea already started. Cheers!
@david_durant I agree with the idea of open sourcing application which Nokia intends to "Archive" and stop development on, but your reference to "Failed" products appears a little offensive to the development team.
Nokia have already made Symbian open source for furute versions so maybe there is hope for archived apps being made available to the development masses via Symbain Foundation.

@david
completely agree. Nokia can just let the community develop this app. This really helpfull for blind phone users
Nokia yes please make this open source and continue development. First you can tax deduct the cost as charity. Second it is GREAT and FREE PR. I mean this can land you a half page article in the New York Times for FREE.
Blind people who need it: Just harass Nokia as much as possible to get it bumped up to important people. Go to consumerist blog to find numbers of executives. And send real surface letters. Send a letter to Finland. They get millions of emails, just a few hundred letters, and few letters with suggestions.
Email endgadget and other tech blogs about it. Ask associations for the blind to send a letter to Nokia.
Good luck!
Nice article. Thanks a lot!!Free Soft
