Nokia Ovi Suite 2.0 Beta Graduated

Written by Samuli Ylinen, Nokia Ovi Suite team

Hi all. As some of you Beta Labs users have noticed, we started yesterday deploying Nokia Ovi Suite 2.0.0.10 release via web update for existing Beta users. At the same time, users visiting ovi.com’s and nokia.com’s Nokia Ovi Suite web pages were able to download Nokia Ovi Suite 2.0.0.10 release. If you didn’t get web update notification, you can download software directly.

This means, that Nokia Ovi Suite 2.0 Beta is now Graduated from Nokia Beta Labs, going into public and many many users will start to use this application around the world. We’re also working towards placing Nokia Ovi Suite 2.0.0.10 into product CD/DVDs in device sales boxes.

Creating new products with this level of complexity is never easy. Last year, Nokia had many different PC application products, like Nokia PC Suite, Nokia Ovi Suite 1.0/1.1, Nokia Nseries PC Suite, Nokia Music, Nokia Software Updater, Nokia Map Loader, Nokia PC Suite Enterprise Edition etc etc, each having different targets, feature sets and design principles. This way of working didn’t lead anymore to any positive outcome, most of the effort was going into maintenance and minor improvements and prevented us from concentrating on new things, improving user experience and supporting other than Windows operating system. So we started to really think, what are most important features from end user point of view, which they can’t survive without. Below you see one conceptual screenshot from Nokia Ovi Suite, which was explored during last year. Lots of end user surveying and explorations were done, before we decided the features for the first Nokia Ovi Suite 2.0 release. But as you can see from screenshot, there are tons things, which we are thinking, evaluating and planning for upcoming Nokia Ovi Suite releases. Also change into Qt framework makes it easier from developer point of view and gives us possibility to support other operating systems, like Mac OSX in future.

Currently Nokia Ovi Suite 2.0 supports exactly 142 different device models from Nokia (over 200, if you count in all different variants). Lots of issues found by you have been incorporated into product during the development.

This is good opportunity for us in Nokia Ovi Suite team to thank you for your efforts. We’ve masses of feedback and feature suggestions from you available and we’re consolidating that feedback, what could be done in future Nokia Ovi Suite versions.

What comes to next versions of Nokia Ovi Suite? Our developers are already heavily working towards next Nokia Ovi Suite releases and our hope is, that we will get some new features and improvements available for you in coming months as new Beta releases.

Cheers, Samuli

Good to see first OVI suite graduate, waiting for new Beta !

Hi,

Nice to see OVI suite graduating, I am hoping that you must have fixed major bug/issues and also performance improvement. I can see size is also slightly reduced to 88 MB.

I will be giving try by upgrading today.

But I am more excited to see future version/Beta, and eager to try them out. Screenshot shows us the way we should be heading. I agree that most users hardly use many features, they just want software that "Just works". But that should not be excuse for having advanced functions built-in.
I am sure Nokia userbase has large population of geeks who like trying new things.

So I am hoping that you will come up with new Beta of OVI suite soon.

Suyog

Linux version please as well

I'm also hoping for Linux support in future versions

well i think it is way to

well i think it is way to early.... i hope by updating now ull have these major bugs fixed, i do really hope so. where will we be writing our bug reports and suggestions from now on?

indeed i like the screenshot in this posts, hope the calendar is coming soon.

anyway, let me download first and come back, ovi suite crashed again in win 7 so i have to install with the installer...

Ive had now a blank black

Ive had now a blank black screen for more than a minute not knowing what Ovi Suite does, cant navigate for a while as Ovi suit is stuck.

Deleting 5000 photos takes forever, even from Deleted Folders? Its only 702 mb.... that was the same problem in ur last release. No other program i know takes that long. In the last release I had the computer running for 6 hours and it didnt finish deleteing "just" from the database.

Im really dissappointed Nokia! Do I have to wait now for 6-8 hours again? Jesus guys, ur deleting photos from a database, not even the original ones from teh hard disc, how could this take so long????

No additional photo sorting options, no calendar, no playlist in Music? mhh

If you want people to switch or use OVI, please make it possible to sync Google Calendar with Ovi...

I also just checked on

I also just checked on Memory consumption, 380 MB and im only deleting photos from Ovi Suite...
This is way to high....

Ovi Suite can not made backup my E90

Today update version to 2.0.0.10.
1st step - make backup.
Set to backup only contacts & settings & calendar. Run. After one hour bar show around 10 % only. Stop it. Restart phone. Nothing to change. Suite can not to made backup.

Previus version don't have it problem.

still work to do

I think the way you built this "graduated" software is frightening. It has a lot too high memory footprint for what it does. Yes, its UI is nicer but what is the added-value? We understand the need of rationalization in your toolset, this is a good point, but you're not in the right direction yet...

another question

does it mean that Qt is not designed for advanced post-wimp oriented UIs?

too high memory footprint

too high memory footprint for what it does - EXACTLY!!!!

Deleting Photos I have this memory usage:

OviSuite 445 MB!!!!!
Nokia M Server 225 MB!!!!!

THATS A JOKE!

not listening to feedback

NokiaMServer is still hanging around in the background while Ovi Suite is not running, serving no useful purpose and using a bg chunk of memory. People complained about this since the first release but it is still there. You need to remember it is all these little continuously running apps that make your customers PCs slow and unreliable, Nokia should not be contributing further to this problem!

FUNCTIONALITY missing in Ovi Suite compared to PC Suite

Dear Ovi Suite,

I am not against change per se, as progress is important.

But I think it wholly wrong to replace one Application Suite with another, if the newer one does not do ALL the things the previous one did first

And I have spotted what appears to be a major functionality flaw in Ovi Suite, when compared with PC Suite, unless you can guide me different.

You see, in PC Suite, and indeed on my phone, all my Contacts have a NOTE field filled in, and in there I simply enter the text, for the name of the corresponding Caller Group I wish the Contact to belong to.

So for example, I have many of my contacts on my phone, with the text "Door Supervision" written in the Notes field, and many more with the text "Newcastle United" written in (my second employer).

There is a very important and useful reason why I do this you see.

Whenever I purchase a new phone handset, I can simply either use the backup tool, or a PC Suite based backup, of my Contacts data, to get all my names and numbers over to my new phone.

However, depending on the model of the new phone etc, quite often this backup and copy over to the new phone, will NOT however, restore the Caller Groups data, which is a fundamental and large element of my Contacts data.

By using the system I do, and having the name of the Caller Group each contact belongs to stored in the Notes Field, I can use PC Suite to easily fix this after a restore to a new phone.

You see, I simply load up Pc Suite, and go to the Contacts Editor.

I then enable the display of the "Notes" field in it, and then click this field to sort all my Contacts by the data contained in the Notes field.

Then I can easily highlight them in a block, all those with the words "Door Supervision" in the notes field, and then easily right click and add them to a Group with this name - and so on...

Alas, as Ovi Suite does not seem to have a column view for Contacts, and nor can you SEARCH on the Notes Field, there appears no way to carry out this function, or indeed do any such data organising of contacts, in the lesser, more basic Ovi Suite

So can you please advise where I am going wrong.

Or am I completely correct - you've LOST this facility in Ovi Suite, the new "Improved" replacement for PC Suite...?

not starting

i installed the graduated latest ovi today on 13 oct. ..this idiot thing is not even starting.. gets a debug error? is this graduation?

It looks like to me that

It looks like to me that Nokia is trying to do something like apple's things, please, it only does works to american guys like, doesn't works for us, who likes to take control at all, we don't want that the application intent to do all for us. I don't realy like this type of application. I prefer PC Suite, because there, I use exactly what I want, when I want, the way that I want and is has everything I need there. That's all.

I closed down OVI Suite

I closed down OVI Suite after having it run all day and finally deleted all 5000 pictures from my database.

BUT NokiaMServer was stil running with 300MB - HOW CAN THIS BE???? Im so pissed, i thought this program is gonna chnage my mind and stick to Nokia products.. but if things dont change im gone...

I'm on a Mac so I only use

I'm on a Mac so I only use the Ovi Suite (on an XP virtual machine) for testing purposes and to download maps. That said, I have to agree with everyone else in that this is not ready. Some gripes:

- What's with the NokiaMServer process still running even after I manually closed Ovi Suite? I see a lot of people asking about this and memory usage (which I can't comment on since I don't use it for long periods) but no answers.

- The home page does nothing useful as it is. It's just an extra step between me and my information. Each of the 4 panels could be replaced with a smaller button and it'd work exactly the same. Show me something I want to see when I open the program; a list of my contact, my calendar (when that's implemented...), my to-do list, software updates.

- Why have the option to log in to my Nokia account? I don't see what's the point. I can't sync the Ovi Suite to Ovi.com.

Please, listen to your users. I really want to like the Ovi Suite, but as it is now, I won't be installing it when (if...) it comes out for Mac.

Praying to God to have a decent app...

I've playing and testing with the betas. From far this product is finished. I think it could be around 50%, from too many to-do bugfixes, and optimisations to run smoothly (nokiaMserver for example...) to all missed features who I miss here, from calendar to manage videos, some advanced music audio management, ore integration with OVI (I think it could be more integrated, from sync to manage your OVI contents more in deep) integration with OVI Store, some basic app management, Nokia Music Store integrated with the app, Nokia Maps integrated here ot just the maploader for planning routes for example... It could be a very loooooooooong list to type just there. Now I wonder If Nokia uses all the words and ideas who users give them for free to make better apps just like toilet paper, print them and use them like that. From far, I think in beta they don't read too much, or at least if they test with quiute high-end computers and with people who really don't try to take it all about ntheir Nokia phone. I use my Nokia 5800 XM for all, navigating, audio, video, maps... all things in one place. This app DON'T have all things in one place. So my opinion is with that is A Big FAILURE. Greetings.

Shinku (just my nick for all who wonders about it xD)

P.D.

I like more the earlier concept. I think is more user friendly and more COMPLETE. Greetings

Shinku

Now tested and...

Just sh*t, as stated. When connect the first time my Nokia 5800 noapicserver.exe, nokiamserver.exe and servicelayer.exe crashed. The second time that I connect the phone the software just doesn't recognise them. This is just an Epic Fail.

Breaks PC-suite?

I really do not dare to install this piece of software, untill I know whether it breaks the existing PC-Suite installation.

Can anyone tell me whether this breaks PC-suite or they can coexist???

I want to give some feedback for this software which I allready expect from above messages is far from complete. I was thinking earlier today, why in the world have a beta site if you guys doesn

Hi!

I don't know where to post new ideas to Ovi Suite, but you could add ability to send photos from PC using email by just clicking right mouse button in photos section and then "send as an email".

Thanks

Dont u get it Nokia, LISTEN

Dont u get it Nokia, LISTEN TO UR USERS AND PUT THIS PIECE OF SOFTWARE BACK TO BETA!!!

I really wanted to like this software but i dont... :-(

way too early

While I like the application in itself,
the idea of running the full application (using 300MB of ram) all the time, only to synchronize my calendar/contacts is not very appealing :(

And the worst thing, it doesn't even synchronize via bluetooth with my N95 8G. It finds the device, starts the synchronization, but nothing happens. When I try to install the support software, it timeouts ...
:(
I have to downgrade to 1.1 ... At least it worked without a flaw ...

It's just a toy

Lack of HTTP proxy support makes this completely unusable in a corporate network.

What's the point of randomly displaying messages, contacts and photos in the main interface view? I don't want passing-by colleagues to get glimpses of my personal contacts or messages, not to mention photos! It's also hard to imagine any use for the feature even if I was locked in a booth with a PC by myself. If I'm looking for a contact, I'll use the contacts view. Same goes for messages and photos - nobody's able to multitask searching for everything at the same time, especially as there are no options to control the rotating flow of entities!

Crapware

Please, can someone tell me whether I can have both PC-suite installed and Ovi-suite parallelly.

Thanks in advance

Bad result

By the way Nokia just annonced a deficit of 426 million euros today for Q3. This unfinished bloatware sure wont guarantee a better Q4.

A satiric view on release blog

Ovi Suite USB connection

I have downloaded and installed OVI Suite graduated (Italian) on Windows XP SP3.
Then I tried to connect my 5800 Express Music phone via USB cable. Impossible.
A new "MTP Device" is repeatedly found by Windows but the connection is not established.
Two MTP Devices in error appear in the list of peripherals.
So, I uninstalled OVI and returned to PC Suite. Unfortunately the problem still persists.
Last move. I uninstalled PC Suite too.
Disappointed, the USB connectiod is definitely wrong!!

What else to do?
Paolo

To padotar

Hi padotar.
With OVI Suite you should select the "PC Suite Mode" when you connect the USB cable. OVI Suite will not work with Media Transfer mode (MTP).

Go to "Settings -> Connectivity -> USB" to change the setting in case the phone does not ask which mode to select when you connect the cable (="Ask on Connection" setting is "No").

bah

I give up - Nokia just isnt putting the same effort into its products it once did.

To Charlie196735

Hi Charlie196735

Would need more info about your problem.
- Just to clarify, with the update you mean Ovi Suite update, right?
- What was the beta version you tried to update?
- Did installer give any error message before crashing?
- Did you succeed in update after cleaning up and trying again?

br
Jaakko from the updater team

Linux support for a Linux Smartphone ...

is it too great demands to have a linux suite for a linux smartphone? This would be great!

@padotar

Try in Add/Remove Programs to repair Nokia Connectivity cable Driver (Click in change not remove) If that doesn't work, follow that: Unistall EVERYTHING about Nokia. Now open the Device Manager: click Start/Run type that devmgmt.msc and ok. Click View, and check See hidden drivers Show Hidden Devices. You must see a new entry in the list, the Non-Plug and Play Devices. In that list at the end you'll see a device called Wdf01000. Right click on that device and click unistall. When Windows prompt to reboot say Yes (Remember to save your current work!) After reboot you should be able to reinstall Nokia PC Suite or Nokia Ovi Suite 1.1 and should work well. Remember not to install that sh*t again! Oh, and if anyone wants to know Nokia Care don't fix problems (calling). I managed better about fixing a problem, an 17 years old boy, than 3 "qualified" technician of Nokia Care. So Nokia, pay me that money for fixing problems LoL (just being sarcastic -.-)

Some comments. Failed...not even passing grade.

I tried importing music from the phone to OVI suite. First few were ok but the rest was total failure. I tried several times but it has consistent result. Obviously there is a problem.

This is just few of my comments. Don't get me wrong but my objective is let you guys know that you have lots of improvement to do. I do care about Nokia too, in fact very much but I am very disappointed too with this product that I need to let you know. I don't know if this the best you can come up with but regardless you need to improve your craft -a lot. Really it is very poor design, functionality, user friendliness. I haven't used any other phone brand phone-computer client but I don't need to use it to say that this OVI suite is really poor. Please please do your job and be the best. If this is your best you can come up with then hire better, capable best in class people.

longest comments thread

i think this could be longest comment thread to any blog here on Betalabs, This shows general unhappiness of beta users(testers). We have been testing OVI suite a lot, even risking loss of data, taking our time. But there not much improvement. Myself uninstalled "graduate" OVI suite within 3 hours. 1 hour went in install/uninstall :)

I hope Dev team must have learnt many lessons. I am not sure how mass's response will be as you are going to put this on cd which comes with new Phones replacing PC suite.

Suyog

Oh please do not include

Oh please do not include this on the new phones. It will be a total disaster looking at the current state of Ovi suite. This will put Nokia in a deep $@#$ once the users got into this trouble. At least I am glad it is not yet delivered to mass market....It needs lots of improvement! Please let us know if you need testers....for free. I will gladly take it.

too late included

Veoritizo.
Think you are too late - as the write this piece of S... software in the header this is released to the public and included in new phones.

Also I noticed that my PC-suite suddenly want to update, I wonder whether this is to Ovi-suite. But I use Win7, and that was not supported. I

How did this get out of beta?

Just installed on my Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit laptop. The mserver executable ran consistently at 50% plus of the processor to the point where the laptop's cooling fan was on permanently.

Uninstalled. Not sure how this 'graduated', perhaps the lab guys were having a bad day. I'd suggest it is pulled and re-enrolled.

Just because the software is free doesn't mean it has to be poorly executed / tested.

Disappointing.

Pretty good, but still some annoying things

I've just installed the third update of the graduated version of Ovi Suite 2.0 (2.0.1.35)... and the App still pops up when synchronizes with my phone... Come on! can't be so hard to make the app work without popping up every time, this is very annoying.

For the rest of the things, I've seen a bunch of fixes and improvements, primarily in performance. This is Great! there is still a huge memory footprint that should be minimized in my opinion...

I agree with the guys in the previous messages, what's wrong with nokia user support?? it seems to get worse every day... I know you can do better Nokia!!!

de-installed OviSuite IMMEDIATELY from my XP 64...

Just wanted to share that I could not even get past the Wizard to get my fresh OviSuite installation configured for use with my N96 on an AMD x2 5200+ WinXP x64 machine at home.
Seriously, right after the reboot, my machine started logging DEBUG Application Eventlogs like mad, mere minutes before it froze up completely and I was left with nothing but a hard reboot to recover.
Needles to say, I IMMEDIATELY uninstalled OviSuite. I couldn't be bothered to try again. HUGE MISTAKE.
Damn OviSuite... >:(

Mac OS X Support

Any news on when Mac OS X support will be added please?

an't sync with ovi.com and

an't sync with ovi.com and Outlook 2007 .
Keep getting errors like 80043c93 or 80043aa3 and once I got an 838c63f2.
All of this on win XP using USB connection and 4.000.000.005 5800XM on the other hand.

My PC Suite prompted me to

My PC Suite prompted me to download Ovi Suite. I did, I tried it and almost immediately deleted it. It has a nice but unnecessary interface and is lacking functionality that PC Suite has, on which I am now dependent.

Outlook on my PC has over 4000 contacts in the Outlook folder "Contacts". I don't want all these on my phone, so many years ago, I used the Outlook categories to mark those contacts with "phone" category as well as any other grouping - Family, Restaurant, Customer, etc. I copy those contacts marked with "phone" to another folder in Outlook called "Phone Contacts". Then in PC Suite, I can select the Outlook folder with which to synchronise, so I keep just 200-250 contacts updated to my Nokia phone.
Same with Calendar, etc.
So, please let me know when Ovi Suite has compatability with PC Suite and I'll look again.
