Introducing Nokia Friend View, an experimental location and micro-blogging service to feel close to your friends

Guest writer: Brenda, Nokia Friend View team.

Video: Nokia Friend view introduced by Stefan Constantinescu.

We are so excited about our public launch that all we can think of is to let you enjoy Nokia Friend View while we go out and party!

note_from_friendview_team.jpg

Meanwhile, we invite you to try out Friend View with your close friends and family to let them know when and where you are having a good time so they can join you!

Why?
Because it is nice to feel close to your friends! With Friend View it is fun to check what

Looks like a great and really promising service! (and probably one that will make it must that one has a large data plan ;)

Anyway, props to the team also for making it work on Safari and Firefox from the beginning!

Can't find my location - I'm using an N81 8GB on O2 UK (Postpay) and I'm based in London however my icon doesn't move from the default Finish location.

When I select More -> Settings -> Location Info, the Location: waiting... never moves from this status.

There doesn't seem to be any 'Find Me' function - that's kind of obvious.

Thoughts?

I've just released tentative support for Friend View updating in PresenceRouter, the Mac OS X application that allows Plazes status and presence to be routed to other web services. You can grab it from http://presencerouter.com/ and read more about the addition at http://ruk.ca/article/5065

I've also documented the programmatic process of authentication and status updating at http://ruk.ca/wiki/Nokia_Friend_View

I am a fan of Nokia phones since 1998. I have always been using Nokia phones for my self and my wife. However I have had a very bad experience with E51.

The phone went in to liquid damage twice within a year of purchase. The second time Nokia repair centre refused to accept it for repairs. All this is OK and acceptable to me.

What i have to tell Nokia is that such phones which are sensitive to even sweat on palm, should not be makrketed by them at all, at least in places like Mumbai, where humidity level is very high.

Nokia is such a brilliant company, this approach is not expected out of them. This only causes irritation and regrete.

Inspite of this i have bought a new 3120. I trust it gives me good service.

great stuff. One thing to think about is '' geo fencing'' , recieving alerts as soon as a friend is in my geographic area.

I'd love to see this app integrated with Twitter. Anyway, good work!

great app - i'm missing an im function though. a buddy should be able to text me (similar to sms) so i don't have to go to the application to see if a friend's online or has updated his status.

i also have one question: i'm using share.ovi.com for a while know and i wanted to use the same name i have there for friendview.
unfortunately the login data wasn't accepted and i had to pick a new name.
do i have to sign up for share.ovi AND nokia account separately?

answers much appreciated

kind regards
baumi

Hi, I own a similar website of yours. I was just wondering if you get a loads of spam? If so how do you control it, any plugin or something you can suggest? I get so much it's driving me nuts so any help is very appreciated.

Basically this is the same as another application called Locatik (www.loatik.com).
I know that this is beta, but I've uninstalled it as Locatik is much more refined and is already well-established.

Ican't wait

Previous 3G access problems with FriendView, I've just been given a reply back from 3UK Network who state there is no block in place and that there must be a problem with the application.

Anyone from Nokia Betalabs wish to comment, as this is a Nokia v Network blame game.

@Chris Si: Indeed, Friend View is not scanning your location continuously as Sports Tracker is doing (due to each of these services specific use cases). What Friend View does is that it scans your location occasionally (not very often in 'background') and posts it for your friends to see, so that they see your

Thank you for the answer! So if you want to meet a friend, he might be already somewhere else .....because it scans the position seldom in background.
The idea of Friend View is great, but would be good if you could perhaps choose "not saving money and battery ;-) " if you have a data flatrate, so it refreshes continously, and "saving money and battery" if you dont want that.

OOOOOH, just picked up my phone to see a notification that I have a friend request, right there on my Active Standby. EXCELLENT WORK.

I am loving this, Thanks Nokia

Nevermind, clicking 'yes' that I wanted to see it caused my E71-2 to promptly reboot. :-\

Very impressive first launch, team, this is a *really* cool looking app/service! Installed smoothly on my E71, activation was dead-simple to follow. Absolutely brilliant. My one nag (and I already submitted this via the feedback form) is why my Nokia Chat buddy list wasn't imported (or why wasn't I asked if I wanted to do this?)

Since both are friends-based, and both use my Nokia Account, surely there's a way to make it easy for these friends to be brought over, rather than have to find them all or wait for them to setup the service and all.

Also, (I know, this is 2 and I only said I had 1), it doesn't look like the maps are the same ones that I have downloaded for Nokia Maps. Surely it wouldn't be too difficult to simply repurpose those maps for use here, to reduce the amount of network traffic?

Anyone wants to become friends? ;-) User ID: amby.

@Nemoi You can do that when adding friends via the web interface

Nice work, install was easy, and the web version is usable. Couple comments:

- Wish it would use the maps from Nokia Maps. Downloading empty maps on the fly, if necessary
- wish it would share contacts with Nokia Chat. separate lists is silly
- Web map is not loading on Firefox on Linux. It did load on Firefox on Windows
- I like the hints and tips screen, that's a nice touch.

The web maps, which were working originally, have stopped working in Firefox and Safari on my Mac -- no errors of any sort, just missing maps.

Also, I don't appear to be able to select the "Easy WLAN" access point, which would allow me to select an arbitrary access point -- all I can do is select from a list of previously defined access points.

One thing that I am missing is writing a few short lines if you are asking for somebody to be your friend. So that when somebody asks you to be your fried, you know who they are and why they contact you.

great job guys once again! Mobile interface is very nice. Keep it up!

All these great apps (I LOVE FriendViewer) only begin to make sense when distributed widely (mainstream vs. tech-oriented people) so please bundle them with new phone releases or firmware updates or else all these innovations will disappear unseen due to lack of critical mass.

NOTICE:

Hi! You might have noticed that we experienced a problem with Nokia Account sing in 12 hours ago. We are glad to announce that Nokia Account is working normally again and so is Friend View. :)

Thanks for your patience,

- The Friend View Team

The authentication issues we had for the past few hours have been resolved and you'll be able to login again. We're sorry for the inconvenience.

Best regards,
The Friend View Team

We're currently experiencing problems with the connection to our user account system. Unfortunately this means that you can't login via web or mobile. We're working to fix this and will post here once the service is available again.

Best regards,
The Friend View Team

Since last night the web client died on me and some others. While posting and updating on my mobile works fine, I no longer see any maps nor does it show me new posts...

This is great stuff. One step ahead of other micro blogs i should say.

Hi, I really like it because it doesn't lag!!! omg this application runs smoothly, I wish Nokia Mapas were like this!

Add Me!

Ok, now i had a bit more time to play with friends view.

Good:
- Easy to setup
- Easy and intuitive to use
- Fast and responsive

Bad:
- Frinds without a nokia or not a member can't read my post/comments. Maybe a option to post messages public/frinds/privat would be an solution.
- I'm mission a widget to show my comments and maybe the map on my one HP and/or in Ovi. Maybe something that looks like a shoutbox.

Suggestions:
- As it is allready a nokia account, it shouldn't be to hard, to insert the posibility, that every time, i upload a new picture/video on ovi, a new Message with the link to the picture show up in my history.
- Nice would be if you would show on the map, at which location i shot a photo or made a post.
- Integration into "nokia photos", so the post show up like sms/mms and i got a more complete log of what i did with my phone.

Wired things/Bugs
- I haven't installed or changed anything on my phone the last week, exeped Frind view yesterday.
Since yesterday my N95-1 seams more responsive to the gps. I even get inside my house a good and correct signal.
The bad, since yesterday its constanly online and transfering data, even if the frinds view application is closed!
In the last 12 hours (around 8 of this i was asleep and not using my phone), i had a datatransfer of neary 4 MB, which could be realy expensive on a phone.
Taskmanager says, there is no programm runing in the background..

Eismaus

Now I cant log in. It worked fine before. I know my password and it wont even log in on my n95 either:(

Tried the application on N73. So far I've encountered some random crashes, but nothing serious.

My question is that does the application support automatic location updates for phones that do not have a GPS chip and no access to an external GPS device? At least I was unable to get my location to update via mobile network positioning. For example, google maps updates my position successfully...

Thanks from the Friend View Team! we are excited about all the feedback and we are trying to work on your comments as fast as we can. We really appreciate all your thoughts, thanks again.

- Friend View Team

Anyone tried the page http://friendview.nokia.com/ with Nokia browser, its unusable? Same thing if opened in firefox and make the window smaller like in phone. Shouldn't someone test these pages with phones also as they are certainly going to be accessed with phones?

I have to correct my previous post. It works on 5800 in "compatibility mode" but not in "normal mode".

Muy bueno aqui os dejo un articulo en espa

Sois los mejores

Nice program!!! :D
If anyone wants to add me as a friend then my username is my comments name :D

Pros:
Easy to set up. (if you have an OVI account already!)
Simple to use.
Interesting features

Cons:
Manually changing locations takes a bit of time. If you are moving more than 2 screens away the location target jumps back to your first location before the map loads correctly. takes a few tries till the map loads so you can target your new location.

I'm sure i'll find a few more pros and cons after i've played with it for a day or 2 :D

Please, please, please integrate this with Twitter!

Good work, but as some already said, it should work together with Nokia Chat and also use the maps from Nokia Maps.
Or at least a possibility to send the location data from somone to Nokia Maps, so you could use Maps to navigate to him/her.

I have the feeling that the GPS connection is a lot worse than it is with Nokia Sportstracker. But I might be wrong, or the day was wrong.
With Sportstracker I have a signal also with my phone in the pocket (N95), with Nokia Friend View not :-(

Publishing your own location and tracking friends should be part of Maps feature, not separate client.
Also it should have possibility to send IM message through data connection(that is active), would be so much easier to agree on meeting point, etc.

This is what at least I've been hoping and waiting for - now microblogging+ finally works as it should :o)
Thanks for great service! Looking forward for further development...
Cheers, Tuomo

If Nokia Chat is :"instant messaging with location sharing".
then how does friend View relate to this? are these apps overlapping?

Wow! Great app. Loved playing with it. It doesn't seem to find my location using the network here in Toronto with my E65 so I am now going to buy a new Nokia phone that has GPS just to use this more.

It would be great if it could alert me when a friend gets nearby and I wander close to them. Say 500m? So I know to check the location and comment and see if maybe they are doing something interesting. Friend sonar! PING!!!

Nice app but could the Friend View Team help clarify how this app will continue to exist when there appears to be certain crossovers in the context of Nokia viNe?

http://www.nseries.com/madebyhand

additional to my last comment: suddenly Friend View sent just one position inbetween, while Sportstracker is continuously sending!

i Wish it support Israel to
Because i have a lot of pepole that use hear their too.
i post that in the largest israel Fourm (www.fxp.co.il)
Please make it Work in israel to - PLAESE! !!!!

(Sorry for my english..)

Excellent!! Any plans creating facebook widget for this service? :)

I tested it on 5800 XpressMusic. It installs, but stops on the mapview.

Nice.

Played with it for a few minutes and allready missiong a widget for my blog/ovi and a posted photo on ovi notification.

I'm jealous. I can't use this as I can't get logged in on my N95-1 - I get an http error 7372 every time.

MNO is T-Mob UK. Any ideas?

Loving it! ;) Now I have to spend my night checking out the unlimited data plans in Italy... (not as easy as you would think ;)

@Lupa: thanks! ;)

Nice.
It looks like we are going toward vINe.
I just missed the photo sharing.

@Renegade Fanboy: It is flowing :)

I can't get the mobile app to work over the 3 UK Network using a E71 or N95 8GB. Is the problem the application or the 3 network blocking access. I can access everything on the internet with my data account, so not sure what the problem is.

Jasmo: fixed (there is a slight delay before you see it). Blame me for this bad-quality Beta Labs website, it's still mostly hard-coded html. Really. Anyway, let's continue on topic...

its great, Nokia Friend View = Plazes + Microblogging is it??

@Arjun: no, Friend View is an experimental project developed by Nokia Research Center, Plazes not involved in this case.

So it is another "free" app that generates loads of traffic. I wish I work for Network operators rather then develop apps for Nokia.

Beware of free software!

Don't just surf. Make waves!

If you click next here
http://www.nokia.com/betalabs/communicationcenter

You'll get page not found.

:)

How about Friend View using the Nokia maps data, Map content so that It will not cost me the GPRS when the map is available and Locations data, Let say like I am going to a Public palace or a restaurant and I want to post its location with my msg that I am going there, So that friends near that location can get know, or friend who don't know the location can come by the time we reach their

Very interesting! The biggest problem I had was that the cell-tower based location didn't work at all (with my E65). There was someone else in the comments saying the same. Anyone got that working yet?

Hi all!

Wow! We really wish we could answer individually to all your great comments, questions, suggestions, etc. Thanks to all that have been sending feedback via e-mail and commenting! As a research team, WE LOVE FEEDBACK :)

We are trying to do our best to answer some issues and at the same time to fix and improve over time... but days are too short! especially here up north ;)

IDEAS: Great ideas we've read so far! thanks a lot!

COMMENTS:
- We will try to work on as many solutions as we can from your comments to improve: our "to do" request list keeps getting longer :-)! Some of the issues commented, are already being considered.

- Account verification happens through Nokia Account, so we ask you to be patient in order for Friend View to process that information and allowing you to have full features.

Thanks again for all the feedback!
We'll keep reading and answering as much as we can :)

Cheers,
The Friend View Team

OMG! So many comments and nobody asked about how is he looking?
A black jacket would be more "in" fashion than that one, because you're wearing a black shirt! "Ding"!

How do you perform network positioning? Is it a part of the S60 API's? Which one?

Cool stuff, but I miss integration with Nokia Maps, ie when I'm at one place, it'd be so cool to have Friend View leverage POI data from Nokia Maps, so it'd recognize you are at a restaurant, museum, train station, etc.
Would be also nice to have integration with Facebook, so your location can also be shared with your friends (poor guys who have no Nokia devices)

@Baumi: Friend View does use the current Nokia Account, if you have a Share on Ovi account only, you need to create still a Nokia Account to use Friend View.

We consider and appreciate all your comments, thanks a lot to all giving active feedback :)

Greetings from the Friend View Team!

Thanks to all for very good feedback,

Here are some answers to questions related to positioning.

@Nick (and others asking about positioning): Friend View uses public Location Framework API available in S60. About Network Based positioning (introduced in S60 3rd Edition, FP1) and Location API examples, check out this Wiki article in Forum Nokia:
http://wiki.forum.nokia.com/index.php/TSS001122_-_Network-based_positioning

@Chris Si: When Friend View is put in the background (keypad locked, screen saver activated, etc...) it goes to a standby mode after a while. This is to save battery. Friend list or messages are not updated, however the position is scanned (and updated to the server if available) every now and then.

Thanks,
The Friend View Team

So if you are a Twitter uses whats the incentive to use this instead?

Hi Dear Friend Viewers!

small NEWS from the Friend View Team:

We now support IE7 :) It has been fixed as well as a small bug that caused few new users not to see the map on the web version.

Please let us know if you have any problem still with IE7 and of course any other problem, suggestion, comment, is very welcome!

Thanks! and have a fun weekend with Friend View!

Cheers

Why cannot Friends View and Sports Tracker use the map data of Nokia Maps? If I have all Europe on my memory card, I don't want to spend time and money downloading maps from the net.

Anyway, a nice application!

Cannot login, all I get is 'HTTP request time out' I have a 6120c on network '3' in the UK.

Reading above I see I'm not the first with this problem.

Thanks for your answer,you wrote:
"@Chris Si: When Friend View is put in the background (keypad locked, screen saver activated, etc

cant add any friends, the search always comes up as No matches found. but if you search for a single letter some names come up.

add me, and see.

Hi! Will be supported

Hi! Will be supported web-interface Opera? Does Nokia Friend View Russian language? It would be great!
