Nokia Chat for S60 3.0

chat_30.PNG

Hey Beta Labs,

I admit that my opinion is biased, but I still have to say that I find it very interesting to watch contacts of my phonebook live, as my friends change their status messages with using ever more imagination to capture what they are doing at the moment. Sadly, not all of my friends carry a compatible device - yet.

Today we're happy to introduce an update for Nokia Chat that'll make our client work on your S60 3rd Edition devices as well (you know, the N73, the E65 and the likes of them). The software works pretty much like the version you've already seen released for the S60 3rd Ed FP1 products, but it'll lack support for receiving location. It can still send the location and can be configured to broadcast your landmark presence, provided you have a Bluetooth GPS module.

So, in practice this should mean that hopefully a bit more of your friends can now take Chat in to use - and we know that it'll make you enjoy the application even more. On that note: did you notice that we have an easy way to invite your friends to become users of the software? Just click on the "Recommend to friend" and we'll have a link for you to share to your friends ready in the SMS editor.

Now, during the testing, we've found out that there are certain restrictions on the SW versions for supporting Nokia Chat in N73, N93, N80 and E61. This shouldn't be an issue if you just update your software using the Nokia Software Updater. For an updated, detailed list, of the devices we support - please see the Nokia Chat page under Beta Labs.

Something worth highlighting is that you need to install both the Support Package and the Chat file to get the software working. You can do this by downloading the packages to your desktop and installing them via PC suite. Alternatively, you can go to http://www.chat.nokia.com/app [Update: link fixed. -Tommi] with your phone browser and do the installations there.

Br, Kristian

Comments

Seems like the downloads from http://www.chat.nokia.com/app are not yet updated.
Internet Support Package is still same
and Client is still 2.0

Woops. I tried to comment earlier, but it didn't seem to go through. So, along with Tommi, I declare us morons too :) We messed up some package the wrong way and hence the problems.

Everything ought to be fine now, and you should get the right packages from both our web site under betalabs, as well as from the www.chat.nokia.com/app.

Thanks for your patience!!

Some replies to comments above:

@gerrymoth: We've exchanged emails about this, but I'm glad you got it working. Indeed, you need both packages (and the right ones, which co-incidentally were not served up right at first). We apologize for the inconvenience.

@Paul: Yes, the S60 3rd Ed FP 1 version didn't get an update. The only new thing was the availability of the S60 3rd Ed version. For a phone that runs 3rd Ed FP 1 you shouldn't see any changes from the past.

@Jukka: We appreciate your patience. We're working on it. We just don't have a big team, and we have to make decisions how to spend the time we have -- of course, we want to do our best to serve everybody :-)

Thanks for the encouraging feedback - and noticing that we did wrong first!

BR, Kristian

Hi,

Thanks for fixing the links :-) Application works on N76. Now just to get some friends to use it... Looks nice!

So why not ad more functionality to the Gizmo client, also offered at Beta Labs? Why another chat client that does not work with other IM services (like Gizmo does)?

I do like the intergration with Contacts, but using two applications for almost the same purpose? I do not get that.

Installed Nokia Chat v1.0 Beta 2 Build 5 onto my N73 & E61, but 'Nokia Chat - Keyspace' doesn't seem to be getting installed like it does on my N95 8GB

I think you've uploaded inverted links: new Beta 2 build 5 for old devices and old Beta 1 build 3 for new ones.

Plus, the support application version (1.05) is older than the one available before (1.06).

conversation window keeps closing on me when using T9 and hitting *(+) for next word. this in combination with the lack of saved history makes a conversation more of a confusation with a little frustervation.

Why does nokia chat keep on signing me out? I have to go in manually tell it to get back online. If i am texting it

@L: Yes, we're trying to make it more fun, thanks for the good suggestions!

@Neblinio, Helsie: Sorry, we've missed out on this problem - I'll ask our team to investigate on this interoperability problem.

@Egor: Valid suggestion, I'll make a note of it.

@Ben V.: It should be visible to the other end.. however, we cannot guarantee that all of the services are standards compliant in this respect. And indeed, if there is a bug in our end, that is a bug and not an intended feature. Could you elaborate on which service you're seeing the problems?

@Konceptz: Sounds interesting discovery - we'll try to find out what the reason is. No restrictions has been put on how many accounts can talk at one time to other domains' users.

BR, Kristian

To elaborate on Konceptz' observation, I wrote a bot to do the same thing as one of the Gtalk conference bots, only from an Ovi account, to eliminate the possibility that the inter server communication was an issue.

It worked fine for a good while, but the server started ignoring it earlier today. It can log in and receives messages (including presence updates) from others just fine, but the server won't send it its contact list, nor will it forward messages (including presence updates) for the bot.

I found some bug when using the T9-like vocabulary.

You type a message, use the * (star) button to change suggested word variants, so the right soft key becomes 'previous', then send the message. See the right soft key is still 'previous' - this should be fixed!
If you try to type in the next message, and use the * (star) key and then the 'previous' soft key, the current chat dialogue unexpectedly closes (terminates), and you have to re-initiate chat session.

Kristian,
Thanks for the response!
I think it would be a good idea to have an option of socket/http, in all the apps if possible. I have seen this few applications, like Nimbuzz.

Thanks,
Uday

today i was at a Friends giving this app a test. i found that i could message gtalk without a problem but i didn't get any answers back. this is odd as its the same problem i get with the wireless village protocol. mobjab tell me this is down to a bug with the n95-1?

0

@Egor: Thanks for the report. I'll pass it to the rest of the team.

@Joost: Sorry to hear this, we've been having some issues with detecting the device versions. We'll test the E61i again to make sure we've got the right routing.

@Ben V.: Thanks for the details, we'll investigate further.

-Kristian

Works on my E71, but not yet on my E61 in Canada..please fix the E61 problem

It installs and works on my E60.

It's working now on my E61i (v2.063333). Nice work.

Its good but it needs a chat feature.. so that 3 or more people can chat together. Without that the app itself is kind of limiting. Maybe through is some video so can see others. Make the app fun guys!

It works, but crashes often on my N80.

The big problem comes when the Nokia Internet Services Support Package 1.05 or 1.06 gets installed. After installing it, my mobile Windows Live Messenger client refuses to connect and gives an error. No matter which type of access point I use, it won't connect (unless I downgrade to Nokia Internet Services Support Package 1.01, which is the version that gets automatically installed when you select Windows Live in the download app)

Works great on E50 (RM-170, running the latest firmware 07.36.0.0).

One thing to mention: it would be good to have an option to turn off vibration and use only sound notification. Currently my phone beeps and vibrates on new messages.

Software packages/links fixed. We are morons. Thanks for letting us know.

(I wonder if we should set up some kind of quality checks to this website. That would slow things down a bit, but would save us from embarassing moments like this)

The N78 is feeling more and more like the unwanted bastard child at the Nokia playground.

The download link is http://www.chat.nokia.com/app

Great, instead of going forward with S60 3.2 client you went backwards.. Sorry about that, can't help myself, I just want to use it on my latest Nseries device :)

Broadening the installed base is all good of course, but by not supporting the latest shiny objects Chat is not serving the early adopters who like to try all the lastest stuff.

Just installed on my Nokia E61-1 with latest FW v3.0633.09.04 and getting "System Error (-1)" when trying to open Nokia Chat.

http://chat.nokia.com/app cannot be reache. When are you planning to have this live?

Hello, i downloaded it to my nokia E71 but when i click on the chat icon it doesnt open at all.

Any help please?

Installed on my E65, the app doesn't start. Installation went well, no problems or errors. Strange...

Its not going backward Jukka.
Users of these phones should have the ability to join the Chat community since there devices are capable of that and they are still more than the 3.2 users.
Great Job Nokia.

Can I ask if anyone has actually got this working on a N73 or E61 yet?

Okay 3rd attempt at posting to this blog.

Nokia Chat is not working on my E61 or N73 (both latest firmware) and is not appearing in Contacts like it does with my N95 8GB

when holding down the nenu key, why doesn't chat appear as a running app? this leads onto the problem i had at the weekend. i fully charged my n95 overnight, disconnecting it from the mains at 10.30, played with chat for a little while and disconnected by selecting exit. but by 4pm my battery had died and i'd only sent about 4 sms and taken a few pictures.
it appears that when i select exit, it doesn't close the app and with it not showing when the menu key is held, makes it impossible to know if its shut down correctly. if i return to the app, i find i'm still connected and don't need to log in?

@danmundo: What is the network that you're using? It sounds like the keep-alive signaling might be set to too long in your case.

@Mann: Yes, this is something we should do, hopefully this is fixed in the next update.

-Kristian

2nd update: The chatt app works completely as soon as I deinstall the Windows Live Messenger app (+ the support program that comes with that one).

(Couldn't test it any further since none of my friends has a Nokia-chat capable phone ;-) )

I just installed it on my E65, but it messed up my phone... :(
App doesn't start, and the biggest problem: Can't open my contacts anymore. Application just doesn't start anymore. It shows to be running in the task list, but when I access it, nothing happens. I can't close it either... Anybody else recognizing this problem? And even more important: Is there a solution?

Little update: Everything works again after removing the support app... Next time better?

Just to make sure I'm not missing anything: I chose an avatar and it shows up on my Nokia 6110 for my own account. However, when chatting to an account that's not on ovi.com, the avatar doesn't show. Is this a bug or the intended behavior?

@Sergio

Have you followed googles instructions in the Hosted Apps Admin Control Panel to allow chatting to outside domains? It is not enabled by default and there are specific instructions. If you have not followed the instructions to enable the support then you will only be able to use your domains GTalk to chat within your domain and to gmail users.

Gmail tie in is nice, although we've discovered a very interesting bug with gtalk conference bots.

While using partychat#@gmail.com or creating and using my own gtalk chat bot, Nokia chat would put the contact offline, never again to be found by Nokia Chat.

I believe this takes place when two or more xxx@ovi.com users try to chat with the same gtalk user. I could be mistaken, I really have no idea why it's going on this way.

We tried numerous times to set up a single contact that would support IRC chat room style chatting. That way we could talk about products, fixes and programs in semi-real time.

It would be amazing if this worked through NokiaChat. We, as a community, would benefit greatly.

Thank you

I like the concept of the product, but I am confused as to why I can only speak with others using this app or googletalk. You guys have the Gizmo product that already works, is integrated with the contacts database, communicates across other messaging services (MSN, Yahoo, etc.), and can make VOIP calls. Why not work with that program and integrate the location services within that?

If you are developing this to be a Gizmo app killer, then fine, I'll wait until it becomes a "killer", but for now, I am excited by the prospects, but can't make use of it... None of my friends use Nokia, or are on Google talk.

If Google made GoogleTalk the Gizmo killer, and you integrated the location services with that, then I would be an extremely happy camper! :)

hello
I am using nokia 6120
Plz send me free applications or inform me any site

Regards
Naeem

If I open the link on my E61i, I get the full web page and cannot download it...-sigh- back to the cable and PC connection.

@Kristian:

To be more precise: It seems no VCard information is transmitted at all. My setup is:

1) Nokia 6110 Navigator running Nokia Chat.
2) GNU/Linux desktop PC running both Pidgin and Gajim.
3) Nokia N800 with built-in Jabber client.

I have two other Jabber accounts, one @gmail.com and one @jabber.ccc.de. I added both accounts as "friends" from my ovi-account and started talking to myself.

No client (neither Pidgin nor Gajim nor the N800's client) is able to retrieve any VCard-Information from my ovi-account. Neither first name nor last name nor avatar are transmitted.

Gajim has an XMPP Console to track the XML-code; the request for a vcard is answered by an empty response:

""

Note the trailing "/" - it should be something like

...

instead.

Also, I'm almost certain that a previous version of Nokia Chat broadcasted a human-readable location info as a status message. It doesn't do so now, I never see that my phone's at home in Pidgin/Gajim/N800.

@Kristian:

OK, this blog doesnt like XML ;)
I'll use "[" and "]" instead:

In my above post, the missing pieces of XML code are:

... by an empty response:

"[iq from="...@ovi.com" to="...@gmail.com/GajimF2037BCC" id="85" type="result"/]"

Note the trailing "/" - it should be something like

[iq from='...@ovi.com' to='...@gmail.com/GajimF2037BCC' id='85' type='result']
[vCard xmlns='vcard-temp']
...
[/vCard]
[/iq]

instead.

How does the chat app connects to internet?
Sockets or http?
I have data plan, where in only http is allowed.

Why does nokia chat keep on signing me out? I have to go in manually tell it to get back online. If i am texting it's fine. but if I leave it idol for a few minutes it goes off line.
why cant it automatically sign back in when the connection is lost?

Please advise

Works fine on my E71, BUT the ability to reconnect when signal is lost has to be fixed. The beta email reconnects automatically. Why can't this?

Is it possible that Chat made something to my N82 GPS-receiver? After installing the Chat-software, I can't get GPS-fix. Or did they turn the big switch at the other side of the ocean?

Dear All,

From my GTalk Client I'm trying to add my new OVI account as a friend but Nokia Chat never received the invitation. I tried using another client login in my ovi account, but the invitaion never arrived. Any help?

Thanks

SA

I have an account for Share, another for Calendar and Another for Chat. It's possible to consolidate all services in one account?

SA

Sergio, I invated my Ovi-account from Gmail's Gtalk web-interface and Nokia Chat asked if I wanted to add the Gtalk account to my list. After that I was able to chat between Gtalk and Nokia Chat

Got the GPS-fix. Must be very poor signal, since normally I've had the fix inside at this location. Weird.

Laalo, thanks. But my account is not an gmail.com account, I'm using our own domain. I'm already tried using a gmail account and works great. But using our own domain, not.

SA

I have feature suggestions for the application! :)
1. Light (blinking LED) notification for missed chat messages, like for SMS or emails.
2. A 'Show current music track' for the 'my status' string. Some PC instant messaging apllications (Google talk for instance) read current music title from Windows media player, Winamp, etc and can show it in the status string. Is this possible for S60 music player?

And to confirm Ben V. findings, nokia account extended information cannot be displayed by other Jabber clients. For example, Gtalk shows my Nokia account as myaccount@ovi.com and the status string, that's all - NO photo, NO anything.

Thanks for all your work, Nokia Chat will grow and rock! :D

Egor's idea of displaying what track is playing is excellent!
but what about giving us a pop up window as we get when new sms/mms/email arrives? there's too many button pushes to get to read an incoming message.
also will msn/yahoo ever be supported?

I have the application running fine, but it does not seem to go on-line after restarting the phone, even though I have that setting activated in the Settings menu.

@scynn: That is exactly the same problem as I have reported above (#38). Hope it will be fixed in the next release.

@Egor ah yes. I see that now. Thank you. Your description was much more precise than mine.

Managed to overcome the "network error" issue on Vodafone - connect using "contract internet" rather than "contract wap". Worked for me. I think you still get inclusive MB with the data bundle

- Sandy

Great App.

Is it posible to add friends using Google Apps? My GTalk account is nnnnnnn@xxxxx.xx. Not gmail.com. Can I add this users?

Thanks

SA

@ SA, tell your friends to add your (you)@Ovi.com to there gtalk client, then add them when they message u.

im facing a problem with nokia chat i signed in and i cant login my username and my password on my nokia e65 on 3 ireland network please can any one help me

Hi again,

Thanks for your feedback.

@Egor: For both of your (very good) ideas, I have to say that you are reading our minds.. Thanks for the confirming the issues related to interoperability with Gtalk, we'll continue to investigate on this, nothing to report yet about this.

@Mikael: I'll report this problem forwards.

@danmundo: We've found this problem and hopefully can fix it for the next release. Thanks for your report.

@scynn, Egor: About the T9 issue, we're working on this.

@Uday: We use sockets, so communications does not go through HTTP. Sorry to hear about this, we may need to see what we can do about this..

BR, Kristian

Hi Beta's.. I'm using nokia chat on mi e61i, and so far it work fine..But I think that some change have to be made, for example, size of the contact list is too big.
*This software only work on nokia's phone... if Nokia want to make something good... make it compatible with others phones like BB, and other simple nokia's phone using java.
*Make it compatible w/other message system like MSN, gtalk etc, it should be an option...
*About roaming... The sw change pretty nice the connection w/ any problem from wifi to gprs (edge), but when I reach my wifi again it doesn't change back why?
*Please more promotion to this software because many people never listen about this program...
*Should have a data measuring level to keep record of expense when international roaming...

I Installed Nokia Chat 1.0 BETA 4 build 2 On My Nokia 5500 Sport & I've Done Everything they wrote First: I installed the support file in the phone memory & then I installed the mobile client & when I Tried to open it, it gave me A Blank screen ( The Screen Frezes) & then the mobile take me to my own Folder Again & I Tried To Restar the phone but the same happens everytime I Try to Open It So Please help me because I Need That Program :( & Thanks For The Support :)

@ scynn,
sorry, i should of made it clear. i use wi-fi to connect and i'm often connected to VoIP at the same time so i have no indication if chat is still running or not. i've not put the updated version to the test yet as it won't offer me anything new until i can chat to msn and yahoo contacts via it. one day yahoo and Microsoft might support XMPP but I'm not expecting it any day soon so in the mean time, an option to connect in nokia chat would be nice

@Rich

It is not impossible. Is the icon showing an active, connected data connection below your signal strength not obvious enough for you to notice that your phone is using a data connection? If you want to sign out of Chat then you should use Options -> Sign out. You will then see that you have gone offline and have the option to sign in. Your data connection should then disconnect if Chat is the only app using it. I disagree that an icon should be shown as a running app since it is designed to be a background application and is integrated into Address Book which will already show an icon when it is running.

Hello!
Very Interesting post! Thank you for such interesting resource!
PS: Sorry for my bad english, I'v just started to learn this language ;)
