Nokia Location Tagger updated to 1.0 Beta2

Guest blogger: Antony Pranata from Nokia Location Tagger team.

Hello everyone. We are back with the updated Nokia Location Tagger. What

Comments

Hi, I've tested it on N82 and I've still got the same problem as I mentioned in my earlier post.
[...] But when I upload the photo with Share Online 3.0 or directly with my mobile N82 to flickr the wrong geotag position is shown. [...]

@RS77: The reason why it takes a couple of seconds to "tag" is because Location Tagger is a standalone application. It means it has to wait until Camera application has finished writing to the file (on some devices, it has to create thumbnail as well).

The performance should be much better once location tagging is integrated to the device. :)

Why takes tagging some seconds? It should be done immediately if GPS signal is fixed!

on my nokia 6110 this application "fires off" the built in los angeles map purchased from route66 store (in the navigator program) but is there a way to make nokia maps(stored on my memory card) my default? i currently have 1.0 (not the beta)

@nipi: The current beta application should work on 6110 Navigator. Unfortunately, I cannot comment further on future plan of 6110 firmware. Sorry about that.

@Ratkat: Currently, (unfortunately) Share for Ovi does not properly recognize information from the EXIF data of JPEG files. We are still working to fix this. Hopefully, we'll get the fix pretty soon.

... i am really happy to see your improvements. i espacially like the idea of the automatic post-tagging but for me it is also important to have clear data. i dont like to have a mismatch of real geotagged and 1 hour after geotagged pictures ... so i would like to see some more features:

a) a configuarble time for THIS delay (was 10min, now 60min) this time should be set by the user

b) an additional information in the exif data if it was realtime geodagging or post-delaytime geotagging

c) and additional info in the exif data about the fix-quality (number of sats, etc.)

... as mentioned before (beta 1), the gps-delay-switch-off-time (and a log-writer) would be a great feature for the general gps settings in the firmware

@ranx: The GPS position is actually acquired every 5 seconds. So, there might be a little bit differences with the actual location where you take picture, especially in a moving vehicle. For example, Location Tagger may have a location data at t and t+5 and you take the picture at t+2 -> it will be tagged with the position at t. If you are moving very fast at t and t+2, there will be a difference there.

About Share Online 3.0, it depends on the country where you are (well, actually it depends on the SIM card). Check this page for more information, http://europe.nokia.com/A4835222

Instead of keeping the log persistent, why not enable the tagger to show a picture that is somewhere in the filesystem on the map if it has the right exif-data? Of course this should eventually be included in the gallery some day.

The icon of Location Tagger in camera app is also displayed in the cam settings and if I choose cam mode. I think it will be better to show this icon only at camera capture mode.

@jg: Cell-triangulation and WiFi positioning are definitely in our "radar". Unfortunately, that's all I can say right now.

Can you PLEASE PLEASE make an option to add the **CELL ID NAME** as well.?? As most of my pictures are taken inside.

If photos could be tagged with cell location then that would allow pretty good approximation as to the part of the world the photo was taken with when there is no GPS signal. (like photos taken indoors).
Google maps seems to do a pretty good job of it.

Also this would allow phones without support for GPS to geotag their photos with the location of the nearest cell.

Excellent! What I had hoped my N95 would do originally...

BUT, I would very much agree that some form of Cell-triangulation positioning is needed - I expect more phone-camera pictures are indoors or in urban areas than is the case with "traditional" cameras.

There should however be some form of flag to indicate that the geo-tag is less accurate, although I've no idea how! I know Flickr has a position "granularity", but I'm not sure if that info can be included in EXIF?

...also I agree with comments above re.:

Log clears itself unexpectedly,

and it would be great to have a bit more feedback regarding Sat status on the camera screen.

My GPS tags on the N95 contain a comma "," instead of a dot ".". When I upload with ShoZu to Flickr the tags get split.

The result of this is that all my photo's get located at degrees and not the minutes and seconds.

What I can do ? Any idea?

Does it work with 6110 Navigator?
Btw, where to get better map on Estonia? Current has only Tallinn and few major roads, without the rest of country.

Hi, Haven't downloaded the latest version yet but its great to see some suggestions from the previous comments going in, keep up the good work :)

Firstly, I would like to agree with the above, that cell ID positioning should be a priority.

I would like to know whether it is possible to read the latitude and longitude embedded in the EXIF headers using Java ME. Any idea how this could be done? I would really love to use this information in my own application.

Also, just a suggestion, but it would be nice if videos were also location tagged. Preferrably with the location at the start of video capture. Or even at regular intervals. I realise videos don't have an EXIF header, but some means of tagging, even in a separate file would be very useful.

Hi All,

The site has been featured on the Register ...

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2008/02/29/location_tagging/

Hmm, my previous comment has disappeared.

Anyway, what is the format of the Lat/Long in the Exif data fields and is GPS time supposed to be written in also? I am running Tagger on an E90 and the GPS time field shows as 0:0:0

I think magick has the right idea, with a geotag in any photo being available to view in Maps; after all, you may want to see where someone took a picture which they've sent to you. However, I appreciate that might require a lot more work to implement...

Some improvements:

* add a menu entry at "log" with "Tag manually". In this case user could use saved waypoints of Nokia Maps for tagging photos manually
* do not clear log list always after exiting program
* show numbers of sats and state at main screen

This works really great on N95 8GB, I agree with RS77 above, don't clear the log after exiting program, it makes the 'Show on Nokia maps' option almost worthless.
Because the log clears on exit you can't go back later and view the images location on Nokia Maps

Forget to mention, also installed on Nokia E51

It works great with my external GPS, Location tagger indicator works fine even in the very basic E51 camera app, images are tagged and you can view then in Nokia Maps.

Then you can upload them to flickr either using email or ShoZu, they show up on the map just fine.
Come on Nokia what about a version of Share Online for 'E' Series phones

Works fine on E61i + external GPS. Uploaded to Share Ovi via email. Agree with Ratkat in #3, what about Share Online for E Series? :)

Although the location tags upload fine to Ovi Share, Ovi appears to interpret the. Coordinates wrong, for example Waterlooville, hampshire in the UK becomes Goodwin Sands in the English Channel.

They work fine in Flickr

Hi there Antony, great release!
Isn't there a way that Location Tagger becomes integrated on the camera application as well (on an N95)? Or any type of shortcut that triggers the Nokia Location Tagger when the camera lens is opened?
Auto-start in that way would be great.

Thanks to Ratkan and nbelousov for testing it on E51 and E61i. :)

We have tried our best to make this application works on as many devices as possible (no longer specific to Nseries). It may still not work on some devices/firmwares; but hopefully not so many of them.

Please do let us know if it doesn't work on your device/firmware.

How does the showing pictures on Maps work? Is it only for pics taken with beta 2?

Hi, Really a great product! I have the impression that this application takes the true GPS position after every pics, is it right? Someone spoke of a configurable delay, it's a good idea to group all pics of a session.
I got a problem with Sharing Online 3.0, I can't add accounts other than Flickr and Vox, I made an account on OVI from my PC but i can't add it on.
It will be also a good thing to connect accounts on .mac.com servers, almost every Mac users have a link of their own iDisk on the desktop.

My N95 wear the latest firmware and the latest version of tagging and sharing apps

@TomJ: Unfortunately, it is currently available in the Logs history. There is a request from RS77 already (see #1) to make Logs history persistent so that we can always use "Show on Map" feature. This should be available in the next update. So... stay tune.

@Meraj: Theoretically, it should be possible to integrate Location Tagger to the firmware of N95. However, there is no plan yet. The location tagging is still pretty new to Nokia. We now release it as beta version first to the public. Then, we'll integrate it on N82 (this will be the pilot project). Let's see how it goes after that.

Update to post #41. Using a different software program (Exiftool & ExifToolGUI), I am able to see the GPS data for the photos in the Exif info. The latitude and longitude are there, but there is no GPS Time or Date stamp. There is Date and Time data for when the photo was taken. Any thoughts as to why the photos don't get auto-tagged to the Sports Tracker map? I have not tried tagging them to other mapping programs such as Google.

Hi and thanks for a great opportunity. Do you think the software will be available for the 6110 Navi?

I so like this blog, and Nokia :)

I agree with Bradley, would love to see location tagging of videos added to future versions. It's weird at the moment when it integrates into the camera app, but just does nothing for videos. Please extend it to include videos as well.

The program is not tagging photos with my 6120C using bluetooth GPS receiver. I have version 1.0 beta2, and everything seems to work OK (program launches, detects GPS data, shows the icon in camera mode, and gives the message that photo has been tagged after taking a picture), however no GPS data shows up in the EXIF info. I've imported photos to Sports Tracker, but without the GPS data in the EXIF header, I have to manually link them to the map.

I am using Nokia Share on n82 and with or without Location Tagger the coordinates are uploaded to flickr but the location is always totally wrong. This only happens when uploades with nokia share. It looks like Nokia share changes some bits and mess the coordinates. any idea how to fiz this?

Sorry for all the posts, but I wanted to update regarding posts #41 and #42. Apparently, the issue is not with Location Tagger but with Sports Tracker. I was able to successfully upload (via PC) my geotagged photos onto Flickr and also create a Google Map. In both cases they are correctly linked to their locations on the maps. For some reason, Sports Tracker did not detect the GPS data in the EXIF.

With the updated Location Tagger 1.0 Beta2, the problems when working in N95 persist, so disappointing....

the previous problems:
"After using the location tagger, the quickoffice doc turn into unreadable code and also other photos in the microSD cannot be read in my N95(firmware version 20 - HK)."

Great software, mostly. Does anyone experience the problem where it just disappears? I have it run in the background, switch to it to make sure I have a GPS lock then open the camera app. I see the little indicator telling me that it will be tagging the photo but then after taking the shot it disappears and no tagging. No error message and not consistent behaviour but happens about one time in three. Cheers ... Wazza

Same Problem here!
When I upload using Nokia Share 3.0 on N82 the GPS data is wrong on flickr but correct on Ovi. Using Shozu the GPS data is right. Nokia Share 3.0 seems to cut the minutes when uploading to Flickr.

Any Ideas?
