What are the top-3 things in your Nokia that you want to get done from your PC?

pc_phone_2.jpg
Update: picture updated from "girl with a Mac" to "guy with a PC". The earlier pic was indefensibly misleading, as PC Phone doesn't support Mac. My fault. Sorry for confusion. - Tommi.

As Nokia PC Phone is currently the hottest (= most-downloaded) application under Beta Labs, I wanted to highlight this comment from the development team:

Thank you for all your input.

We have received quite a lot of personal feedback to our email address and we have tried to reply to all of you who have sent some comments, incident reports or proposals.

What we would like to hear from you is the following :

Now that you have experienced using your Nokia from your PC, and you understand what can be done with this kind of approach - what are the top 3 things in your Nokia that you want to get done from your PC?

Thanks for your encouraging feedback !

Best wishes to you all for 2008!

I think that you should write the program in a language that could run directly in Windows, Linux or Macs, such as Mono.

I've just stumbled across this site whilst struggling to sync my N73 with Thunderbird/Lightning. Nuf said!

Icon in firefox is too big and makes the bar where it fits too tall, should be resized in my opinion
from phone would be usefull seeing pc files

-syncing with thunderbird/thunderbird please!!
-A clear changelog update with each release
-Smaller, more often releases!
-9300i rules! :)

Thanks!!

One function i'd like is to be able to print pdf's and other documents direct to wireless/bluetooth printers.(well if you can, i can't find it!) :( ability to mirror whats on the phones screen on to a pc in the pc-phone app.

I would like to be able to pick several sms messages and print them all to same paper.

I would like Nokia to be able to sync calendar with the standard icalendar files (.ics) that can be generated by most of the calendar tools (instead of limiting the synchronisation to outlook and lotus notes).

I already spent hours by searching the solution how to synchronize Thunderbird (contacts and calendar). SyncML is solution, but since I don

suport for even more phones. not only s60V3 but also V2.

also check out this fabulous app www.mobiledit.com/me_overview.asp get some ideas from them..and improve them

mac version

and full support of notes and sms from Mac

I've already posted this to one of the PC Phone threads, and you can refer to that for more details, but I wanted to reiterate my thoughts here...

What I would like to see most is an advanced SMS management and archiving application. What I mean is the ability to download SMS messages from one or several phones, consolidate the SMS' into one archive or arrange them into several archives, and then be able to sync the contents of one or more archives back to the phone(s).

Thanks for listening and keep up the great work!

Build PC phone in Adobe's AIR or Microsoft's Silverlight. Use the Mobile Web Server and build me a beautiful UI where I can manage my calender, my media and contacts.

See all these people here begging for Mac versions or Linux versions? Build on top of a RIA platform, write once, run everywhere.

Nice software but would like to see them available also on Mac OS X, Linux and Maemo platforms.

The ability to walk down a street and click on logos, trademarks, keywords, slogans, RFID, billboards, 1D 2D, QR, DM codes, to find information, direction, location, cheapest price, coupons, etc. I want to be able to say it an have instant information sent to my mobile. I do now what spam on my mobile. Permission based response is the only way for consumers to get what they want.

ONE READER for all. I heard Nokia already knows the NeoReader and Neomedia Technologies. Let's get the ball rolling.

http://www.neoreader.com

Would've loved to have used this but on a Mac - even the girl in the pic is on a Mac - please develop cool apps for the Mac so I can get the full use out of my Nokia n95-2

Would like to receive incoming sms's on the pc screen when the phone is connected to the pc - basically use it like a im client.

Also, the pc suite should be able to read only the new messages on the phone and copy them over - right now every time it has to read all the messages on the phone.

I would like to be able to use the phone as a webcam.

What else... the best feature would be to sync it with Google Calendar. Right now it only syncs with Outlook.

I'd like it to sync with Thunderbird, Sunbird & Firefox so I can use my contacts, calendar, mail and bookmarks where ever I am.

I'd also like to be able to view photos in my web browser without having to upload them from my phone first.

Viewing messages as threads a la Conversations would be nice too.

Ta

Synching with thunderbird ain

1. I'd like to use my phone either as a webcam or microphone. I imagine this can be done by extending the video/sound recorder to make it able to transfer data to the PC in real time.

2. This may be a bit off-topic but, if possible, I'd like to have my PC internet connection on my phone. I mean have the phone connected to the PC and thus be able to access the PC Internet connection through the phone.

3. An emulator of the phone interface on the computer's screen. Basically a sort of TV-out, but the image is displayed on the PC, and you can use the PC to interact with it (i.e. write text more quickly, manage files easier, test new applications etc). Like the Carbide.C++ emulator, but interactive.

First of all I'd like to say that Nokia Beta Labs is the best initiative made by any mobile manufacturer ever! Makes us the users understand that Nokia will provide us with useful applications which makes our investment even more valuable than we thought in the first place! And this creates customer binding, as you know of course. Keep it up!

Now down to business - What Nokia-functions do I want to do with my PC.. Here it is:

1. Remote phonecamera control. Web camera functions is one thing, I think this applications exists already, but it would be even more exciting to have the possibility to control the phonecamera completely from a distance. And "distance" does not only mean Bluetooth-distance, I want to remote control my N95-camera through internet, by 3G, EDGE, GPRS and WLAN! This way I can put my phone in a remote location and take pictures and movies from a PC interface. The web server application does some of this already, but I would like to have complete camera control including adjusting all settings, programming time lapse photography, using both cameras on the phone, sound transfer etc. (And it should be possible to store current GPS location data together with the picture taken - but that's an other matter.)

2. The PC Phone should be developed further. It is a very nice business application which enables Nokia mobile phones to compete even better with fixed line phones and IP softphones. Look at the functionality og fixed line PABX phones and IP softphones - and implement the best features from them.

3. USB charging. The N95 doesn't charge through the DKE-2 cable. I don't know why this isn't implemented. Everyone else has it, but I guess it's because of some limitation in the phone. One needs a separate USB-charger to power up the phone from the PC, this really should not be neessary.

More customisability (not a word, I know ;)

ie. Active Standby plugins, More menu options available (designing my menus from a PC application would be sweet, and the ability to add web bookmarks, flash files etc as a menu item), Flash files as desktop wallpaper.

I would like to be able to customize my phone's GUI through the PC. I mean be able to completely control the interface of the phone through an AJAX-style GUI on the PC.
Or alternately, a more stripped-down version of the above (and probably much easier to implement) - control the various phone settings (all of them) from the PC, since maneauvering the menus is easier on the PC.

Also, how about a quick-app to control the phone's wallpaper? (something like picassa or flikr's auto-wallpaper)

I agree with DK and other comments that we really need more mac compatability...nokia and mac were made for each other...come on guys, employ some mac developers and you would see a huge surge in innovation, general creativity and diversity of using all the Nokia apps!
Pleeeeeeaaase?!!!!

Mac version!

I bluetoothed many contacts from N73 to N95

These "cards" are in the SMS-inbox

These are not visible in the PC-phone inbox

Please make these visible and let me save them as contacts.

Synchronizing Outlook via WLAN would be great. If I am roaming through various company buildings, Bluetooth is not of much help. And most companies do not (yet) permit direct synchronization with Exchange Servers.

- I want PIM tools that can allow me to view, manage and sync the calendar and notes to PC Phone webpage, something like Palm Desktop except built for PC Phone webpage. This would be great for people like me who don't have Outlook or Lotus Notes or any other full blown commercial PIM required for PC Suite.
- I want to access the phone's bookmarks and RSS feeds so I can view them clearly when I have access to a PC with a nice monitor. I also want to be able to bookmark pages while using the PC Phone to my phone instantly.
- I would like an overview page, something like a portal paneled type iGoogle layout or Sharepoint mainpage where I can see all my phone content such as contacts, phone logs, SMS/emails, coming calendar appointments, recent bookmarks etc. in one page.

Support for other platforms like Linux and Mac and for browsers like Opera, Safari would be good.

easy wlan file sharing. symsmb by telexy does this but it's a real pain to use

Mac version

As sboy2010 says in comment number 3, I would like a way to synchronise my Mozilla Lightning/Sunbird events and tasks with the Calendar app in the mobile.

Would be really nice having PC Phone working on Windows, Mac and Linux.

Also nice would be having the phone connected to Internet through the Bluetooth connection and a PC with Bluetooth and Internet access.

Synchronize my Mails with Outlook. On Windows Mobile this is absolutely standard, and now i'm missing that on my N95 8GB. It is the best phone i ever had, but this little thing with the mail could it do perfectly. Thanks a lot

Will it be developed for the E65, looks very useful.

Hmmm

1. Send SMS from Outlook
2. Remove/Merge duplicate entries in Phone's Contacts/Address book. This is very, very, very annoying and tedious to do manually.
3. Take screen shots - handy when testing.

This is very good news from Nokia.
Look like it's working pretty good for a Beta..

One major improvement would be the ability to "crab" Firstname,Lastname information also when using the "Add to contacts" option in Nokia Pc Phone" ,now only number is imported.
For example if data existed in a table you could select multiple fields (as it usually does) and select "Add to contacts". Then new entry would have Name details filled.

Thanks.

Thunderbird/Lightning/Sunbird-syncing is definitely THE thing to add next!

Sorry for little supplement to my comment - MS Outlook is not an application "to be used by human person" by my meaning and anything will hardly force me to buy Lotus Notes (then is better to buy different phone which I can sync with Thunderbird/Sunbird). As for contacts - nothing is easier and more effective than to manage contacts in the address book like Thunderbird has and than use high quality synchronization software to your account at any Internet server and your mobile phone. That is for the explanation why and what I would expect from the new PC application for Nokia phones.

Thanks and good luck again.

To interact directly with my PC/MAC over my mobile phones internet connection, so i can control my pc, remote screen view it.. download files too and from it aswell.
I'm aware certain servers can do just the filesharing thing, but thats not what i mean, i want to directly control my pc like they can on blackberry's and on windows mobile phones.

Hi,
I am using Nokia N81 8GB handset want to sync my tasks from
Sunbird into my mobile. Please let me know any application or
procedure to do the SYNC. I know we can do with Microsoft Outlook but i am interested in Sunbird.

Thanks for your time

Regards
Venkat

Hi.

I would like to be able to synchronize my telephone data with Thunderbird/Sunbird.

I do not own Outlook, and Outlook Express does not support calendars.

Oh, and since we got to ask 3 things, Linux support would also be nice.

Thanks,
Paulo Pinto

1. Sync with Google Calendar (or any other iCal site) I can do it through GPRS/EDGE but it cost me money. I wish to do it by cable, IR or bluetooth

2. See thumbnais of my phone pictures

3. Edit my contacts. PC Phone can already do that.

I would love 'it' to ask (when in the stand-by sys tray mode) whether I want to answer phone traditionally, via loudspeaker or via PC Phone.

I put myself behind the contact pic. idea above.

Support for Linux is not nice, it's required.
I just dropped Windows. What a shame, the PC suite doesn't work on Linux.

Definitely, synchronisation with other software is crucial.

I am forced to keep the buggy Outlook just for my Nokia phone.

My wishlist:
- Synchronisation with Google Calendar and Gmail
- Synchronisation with Sunbird, Thunderbird
- Plugins for Facebook, Myspace, Flickr, Youtube (I know you're working on this last one)
- Synchronisation with Mozilla Flock
- RSS feed updates

Nokia shouldn't have created that Lifeblog thing because that restricts us Nokia users to a realm. We want to participate in worldwide social networks, i.e. the most popular ones.

Do keep me in the loop once my wishes come true!! :)

I would like to be able to sync my N73 direct to Palm Desktop, then I could throw away my copy of Outlook.

Syncing with thunderbird/lightning is needed. Thanks.

Syncing with lightning/sunbird
Thaks!

Would like a phone to list a 'time of ringing' with missed call notification - this would give an indication how badly one was needed for this call.
Also would like a filter based on word(s) in arriving SMS messages to change the message tone, for example the message containing the word 'critical' I would assotiate with some alerting tone.

Synchronisation with Sunbird, Thunderbird please

Syncing with Thunderbird.

Linux (+FreeBSD!) support.

Better integration of alerts + messaging.

-Synchronisation with Sunbird and thunderbird
-remote phone camera
-connect to internet via bluetooth / PC

- Syncing with Thunderbird/Lightning
- Better version for Mac computers

-linux support
-synchronization with mozilla products (Thunderbird/Lightning/Sunbird)

syncing with sunbird, please!

... also, syncing with google calendar.

Like to use the mobile as a scanner. I mean if I can take a clear picture of A4 sheet using the mobile camera, it can be used as a scanner. If Nokia can do some research into this area and come up with some idea it would be nice. I assume there would be a setting for scanning in the photo options and a cardboard stand or so to place the phone with a pre-experimented measurements it will do.

Once again please make syncing with Sunbird/Lightning possible!
PLEASE!!!

1) syncing with Thunderbird and Sunbird/Lightning (and Firefox for bookmarks) (hell, it's one of the most-used combinations, for sure more than lotus and exchange (Outlook))
2) Linux Support

When I connect my mobile phone to a PC, I like to have a extreme secure storage device. Now it is already possible to use the phone as a storage device (e.g. with a 8GB memorycard) but in some conditions this is not save enough. Of course you can encrypt the data but there is so much more tech available in the phone what offers extreme high security. Use the mobile internet connection to communicate to a secure server for this purpose.

Some ideas for the secure application:

- Access to to data is only possible after a verbal verification. Use the microphone to reccord a phrase and use the mobile internet connection to send it to the secure server for verification.

- The data on the memorycard can only be accessed in devices which are known on the secure server.

- The data can only be accessed in a predefined timetable. Verify the correct time on the secure server by using the mobile internet connection.

- The data can only be accessed in predefined locations. Use the built in GPS receiver to determ the location. E.g. the data can only be accessed at work or at your home.

Like so many others, I am also struggling to sync the calendar of my S60 3rd phone (E61i) with the Thunderbird/Lightning combination.

I don't understand why this hasn't been done in the past as Nokia, at least that was my positive impression, usually was quite open and supportive towards OSS, unlike Apple for instance, which for me is a quite big argument to stick with Nokia... And since the PC Suite overall is quite good, it's kinda frustrating, that there is still support for the Lightning or Sunbird...

So keep up the good work, but please open sync also for Mozilla users. If you browse through the web you will realize that many of us have this problem (just look at this list...).

- better linux support
- syncing with sunbird!
- overall possibility to sync data between devices without having to use third party (ie nokia, google) servers. the crucial point is that the data should not be in the hands of or in control of a third party.

1.pc to phone ,pc to mobile calls for free in india
2.best quality sound
3.best coverage

sync with ldif & ical and/or thunderbird/lightning would be the greatest step to simplicity.

SMS management and archiving functionality per MyPhoneExplorer for SE phones I recently purchased an e71 and the poor SMS management available for nokia phone is quite simply underwhelming and makes me want to go back to my simpler SE phone.

linux support

Just give us linux support, Keep ur code/API open. & Open source community will take care of all the stuff mentioned above!!!!!!!
