Had a little play and found that after I added a second location (Leicester, UK) for the weather data the data never showed. I then deleted the original location, leaving me with a single location and stopped the page loading. I then received "The weather service is unavailable" message shortly followed by the weather data for Leicester, UK appearing.

Not sure if this is a silverlight beta or server issue so closed browser and re-started (with only Leiceter, UK selected as location for weather data). Data still did not display and page had not completed download after 3-4 minutes so stopped the page load again and received "The weather service is unavailable" message, but this time this stayed.

Re-loaded page and watched the loading screen sit at 100% for over 5 minutes before closing the browser. This was all done using the standard Nokia Web browser.

It is not a RAM issue as my RAM was still at 27.86Mb available.

Thanks for trying and reviewing Silverlight. The issue you mentioned about seems like an issue with MSN weather service. Since Silverlight works on desktop, you can launch the Bing app on your desktop and verify if you're getting weather data. If same issue than definitely a server issue.

I'll post an update after testing the Bing App on the PC later this afternoon.

I had a feeling it was probably server, but will check.

Just re-tried on my N97 with a bookmark set-up to the following web address and all is now Sunny with a degree of cloud.

Tried Bing site via IE8 on Netbook and all is fine. The only real issue I am seeing with the Symbian version when compared to the PC access is that the symbain version is VERY slow in comparison. Is this something that can be improved or is this a side effect of running silverlight on Symbian devices with less Power and RAM than a PC?

The current 5th edition hardware is only 400 MHz ARM 11 CPU, 128Mb RAM and No GPU for graphics acceleration. Comparing the performance with desktop that typically has 2GB RAM, Dual Core processors is bit unfair. We're trying to improve the overall performance but it won't be like desktop.

Apologies. I was not stating that the performance comparison was a result of the Silverlight application I was pointing out that the performance of the application would be limited by the hardware limitations in a hand held portable device which's main function is to be a phone, all be it a smartphone.

My question was more along the lines of is the current speed the best we can expect due to the hardware limitations or are there still areas for improvement being worked on by the development team?

Do we need to be looking at the next gen smartphones with improved hardware capabilities to get the best out of Silverlight on a mobile device?

Apologies again if my wording caused my post to be misconstrued.

No apologies needed. Infact you raised a very important point about the performance and how we as user percieve it. We have not exhausted the limits yet and there is a room for improvement. We're investing in improving the overall performance of the runtime. Making apps performant on constraint device is quite a challenge and we're doing our bit. We'll work with Nokia to bring Silverlight on Next gen devices which hopefully will be powerful compared to current set. This is a begining...

Are there plans to make variants oof silverlight functionality automatically to websites in the way that certain websites have a PC based and Phone based version (ala Beta Labs) resticting some of the power hungry parts of the site to better fit, but size wise visually and memory to smaller devices?

The reason I ask is that visiting the Bing test page is the same on the PC as on the N97. Is this merely because it is designed to mimic a mobile based Silverlight page?

Bing app on PC is designed to mimic the look-n-feel of the mobile app. Essentially, it does not do anything different. This is the beauty of Silverlight. The app developer can however write optimized versions of their app for various screen sizes and form factors. In other words, if you develop a Silverlight application for S60, it'll run as-is on PC. Vice-versa may not be true because of small form factor of phone.

I was thinking more along the line of website apps/development tools like Wordpress and Joomla & droople have a simple setting which I thought simplified the site somewhat too to reduce load times is there anything like this planned for the Silverlight developement kit?

Actually No. App developer need to take care of this. Wordpress/Joomla are server side products and they achieve this by parsing the user-agent string that browser sends. Silverlight on other hand is a client side runtime and will try to render whatever server will send.
